<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" style="font-size:25px"><em>Defending Ecosystems With Local Collaboration</em></h2>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">Deforestation&nbsp;generates about 20 percent of greenhouse gasses, which contribute to global warming and <strong><em><a href="https://crossbowcommunications.com/climate-change-eroding-public-health/">climate change</a></em></strong>. Deforestation also cripples our planet’s ability to filter carbon dioxide&nbsp;from our air. Unfortunately, deforestation also threatens entire watersheds, endangered species and endangered cultures around the world.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">A marketing firm from the United States is donating its services to raise money for a pioneering <a href="https://garychandler.com/deforestation-surging-across-africa/">reforestation</a> program in Tanzania and Kenya.&nbsp;The project is the first step of a global program that will help fight <a href="https://garychandler.com/climate-change-solutions/">climate change</a> and poverty, while protecting <strong><a href="https://crossbowcommunications.com/the-history-of-issue-management/">endangered species</a></strong> from loss of habitat and rampant wildlife poaching in both Tanzania and Kenya.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image is-resized">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Kilimanjaro-wildlife.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="900" height="659" src="https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Kilimanjaro-wildlife.jpg?resize=900%2C659&#038;ssl=1" alt="wildlife conservation and climate solutions campaign" class="wp-image-4730" style="width:400px;height:auto" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Kilimanjaro-wildlife.jpg?w=990&amp;ssl=1 990w, https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Kilimanjaro-wildlife.jpg?resize=300%2C220&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Kilimanjaro-wildlife.jpg?resize=768%2C562&amp;ssl=1 768w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">Crossbow has joined forces with <strong><a href="http://sacredseedlings.com/east-africa-projects/">Sacred Seedlings</a></strong>, an&nbsp;international reforestation and forest conservation program. Together, they hope to raise millions of dollars for forest conservation and reforestation programs around the world. The first phase of the project is in Kilimanjaro District of Tanzania.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:21px"><em>“These trees will create jobs, preserve habitat for endangered species and help offset human contributions to climate change.” said <a href="https://garychandler.com/public-affairs-consultant-arizona-colorado/">Gary Chandler</a>, Crossbow&#8217;s CEO.</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">As Chandler explained, some of the trees will be used to reforest degraded forests and deforested areas. Other species of <a href="https://greenercities.org/cities-urban-forests-global-warming-solution/">trees</a> will be grown to produce crops near villages and in towns and cities (coffee and cocoa, for example). Other trees will be placed near homes and buildings to protect them from the elements, reduce energy consumption, and <a href="https://crossbowcommunications.com/sustainability-author-promoting-climate-action/">minimize greenhouse gas emissions</a> caused by energy demands. Sacred Seedlings also will fund several solar ovens for villagers to minimize the need to cut firewood for cooking. The company is developing similar programs around the world.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">Tanzania also is one of the last strongholds for wildlife in Africa. The country known for the Serengeti National Park and other natural wonders is under siege by wildlife poachers. Last year, more than 10,000 elephants in Tanzania were slaughtered for their ivory. The strong demand for ivory in China and Thailand, for example, tempts locals in Tanzania and surrounding countries to kill elephants to feed their families. Unless economic interventions, such as job creation, succeed, the African elephant will be gone from the wild within the next decade. Rhinos and lions also are highly endangered and face the same fate. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">“We’re tracking down sponsors, grants and donors to help make this program possible,” Chandler said. “This will be the first of several reforestation programs around the world. Hopefully, we can launch several across Colorado and the America’s very soon.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">Our project will incorporate several species of trees that are indigenous to the area,” said Tumaini Mosha, project director for Mellowswan Foundation Africa-Tanzania. Crop-bearing trees such as coffee, cocoa and palm also will be grown and planted in some urban areas and villages to block buildings from the weather and to grow food. That way people won’t cut the trees down for firewood.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:21px"><em>In addition to the loss of wildlife habitat and vital biodiversity, deforestation is responsible for about 20 percent of the rise in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.</em></p>

<p class="has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">The rise in <a href="https://greenercities.org/data-centers/">greenhouse gases</a>, both human caused and natural, is contributing to unprecedented levels of <a href="http://sacredseedlings.com/carbon-capture-reforestation/">carbon dioxide</a> in our atmosphere, which is contributing to <strong>climate change</strong> and extreme weather.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">Sacred Seedlings, a division of Crossbow,&nbsp;has formed a partnership with the Mellowswan Foundation Africa-Tanzania, EnviCulture and Earth Keepers to plant 100 million trees over the next four years in the Kilimanjaro District and beyond. <h2 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" style="font-size:25px"><em>Developing Sustainability Solutions</em></h2>

<p class="has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px"><a href="http://sacredseedlings.com/"><strong>Climate change</strong></a> is gaining momentum as <strong>global warming</strong> heats up. Meanwhile, our demand for electricity and fossil fuel is accelerating the problem. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">The impact on nations, <a href="http://greenercities.org/">cities</a>, farms and ecosystems is rising fast. People are growing increasingly frustrated with elected officials who refuse to prevent and prepare for the consequences of inaction.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">A sustainability professional from the United States has developed two global programs that can make a difference today. One promotes <a href="https://sacredseedlings.com/climate-change-mitigation/climate-change-and-forest-conservation/">forest conservation</a>, <a href="https://sacredseedlings.com/reforestation-climate-change-solution/">reforestation</a> and <a href="https://sacredseedlings.com/urban-forestry/">urban forestry</a>. The second program promotes sustainable and resilient cities. The company seeks allies and sponsors to help make them a reality.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img decoding="async" width="990" height="725" src="https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Kilimanjaro-wildlife.jpg?fit=990%2C725&amp;ssl=1" alt="climate change solutions, including forest conservation and reforestation" class="wp-image-4730" style="width:400px" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Kilimanjaro-wildlife.jpg?w=990&amp;ssl=1 990w, https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Kilimanjaro-wildlife.jpg?resize=300%2C220&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Kilimanjaro-wildlife.jpg?resize=768%2C562&amp;ssl=1 768w" sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">“The conversation about climate action involves much more than fossil fuels,” says <a href="https://garychandler.com/climate-change-solutions/">Gary Chandler</a>, president of Crossbow Communications. “<a href="https://crossbowcommunications.com/palm-oil-deforestation-global-warming/">Deforestation</a>, sustainable cities, sustainable agriculture and <a href="https://sacredseedlings.com/endangered-species/">biodiversity</a> are issues that demand attention. If our ecosystems fail, we fail.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">Deforestation&nbsp;generates about 20 percent of greenhouse gasses, which contribute to&nbsp;global warming&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://sacredseedlings.com/deforestation-and-climate-change/">climate change</a>. <a href="https://sacredseedlings.com/deforestation-climate-change/">Deforestation</a> also cripples our planet’s ability to filter carbon dioxide&nbsp;from our air. </p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:21px"><em>Destroying these carbon sinks threatens watersheds, endangered species and endangered cultures.</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">Global tree cover loss reached a record 29.7 million hectares (73.4 million acres) in 2016 and it continued at the same pace through 2017. Much of the loss is happening in tropical rainforests, which are vital hotspots for&nbsp;biodiversity, including many&nbsp;<a href="http://sacredseedlings.com/endangered-species/">endangered species</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">The annual loss of forests now covers an area about the size of New Zealand. Forest fires contributed to the recent spike.&nbsp;Deforestation&nbsp;due to agriculture, logging, and mining continue to drive global tree cover loss. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">To tackle those issues and more, Chandler has developed Sacred Seedlings, a program that promotes forest conservation, reforestation, sustainable agriculture and wildlife conservation. The company already has a foothold across Africa. Chandler is working with NGOs across&nbsp;Burundi, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. They have 16 comprehensive projects planned and ready.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">“With our help, they can put their plans and programs into action,” Chandler said. “They need sponsors, donors and volunteers for maximum impact.”</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><a href="https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Greener-Cities-Ad.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="900" height="533" src="https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Greener-Cities-Ad.jpg?resize=900%2C533&#038;ssl=1" alt="climate action and solutions available around the world" class="wp-image-56080" style="width:400px" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Greener-Cities-Ad.jpg?resize=1024%2C607&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Greener-Cities-Ad.jpg?resize=300%2C178&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Greener-Cities-Ad.jpg?resize=768%2C456&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Greener-Cities-Ad.jpg?resize=1536%2C911&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Greener-Cities-Ad.jpg?resize=1080%2C641&amp;ssl=1 1080w, https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Greener-Cities-Ad.jpg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w, https://i0.wp.com/crossbowcommunications.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Greener-Cities-Ad.jpg?w=1800&amp;ssl=1 1800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">Secondly, Chandler has developed a program called <strong>Greener Cities</strong>, which promotes sustainable and resilient cities.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">As Chandler explains, cities around the world are home to about 50 percent of the world’s population. They generate 80 percent of our planet’s&nbsp;greenhouse gases&nbsp;– the primary human contributor to&nbsp;<a href="http://greenercities.org/climate-change-and-cities/">climate change</a>. Meanwhile, many communities are bracing for the increasing threats of fires, droughts, floods, severe weather, population displacement, and others. </p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:21px"><em>Community leaders and citizens around the world must take climate action.</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">Unfortunately, few local communities have the ability to engage their citizens in developing a common vision around this issue. Some need guidance on a collaborative process to achieve consensus. Others need help outlining the spectrum of actions that they can take to cut pollution, save energy, conserve water and promote health and sustainability. Other communities around the world already are in contingency mode and need help mitigating the impacts of&nbsp;climate change&nbsp;on their homes and businesses.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">Many community leaders need coaching to bring all stakeholder groups to the table to discuss opportunities, threats, resources, and priorities. As communities begin planning, they need comprehensive guidance regarding the full range of possible actions to consider in their plans. Many communities are limiting their sustainability visions to the energy efficiency of city buildings and vehicle fleets. They need to learn from other cities that have embraced a broader spectrum of possible actions such as investments, tax policies, water use, tree management, open space, expanded recycling efforts, and many others.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">The concept of sustainable living is not new, but it is experiencing growing interest again because of rising energy costs, depleted natural resources, polluted natural resources, population growth, and concerns about climate change and diminishing resources. At the local level, comprehensive and collaborative visioning and planning efforts, followed by numerous actions, will be a key to success. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">Civic leaders need guidance and resources to engage all stakeholders. They need role models, case studies, networks, mentors, financial assistance, and incentives to help them exchange experiences and resources. These resources and processes can help minimize civic gridlock and promote rapid progress in our race for sustainability for future generations.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">The results of a recent survey conducted by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), the first of its kind, measures how and to what extent local governments are acting to promote sustainability. It indicates that most city leaders need help on many levels to develop successful sustainability plans.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">“Sustainability has emerged as a major public policy issue facing countries throughout the world,” writes James H. Svara, director of the Center for Urban Innovation and Professor in the School of Public Affairs. “Sustainability requires a broad range of actions that must include contributions from all levels of government, from all sectors of the economy, and from all of the citizenry. City and county governments are uniquely positioned to make a significant contribution to the effort. They are directly involved in providing or regulating many of the human activities that affect resource use, promote economic development, and affect the protection and inclusion of persons from all economic levels and racial and ethnic groups.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">Overall, the responses to the ICMA survey demonstrate two opposing tendencies: most <a href="https://crossbowcommunications.com/marketing-agency-public-relations-firm/government-relations-strategy-firm/">local governments</a> are becoming active in sustainability, but most governments are involved at a relatively low level and most of the possible sustainability actions are not being widely utilized. Most governments lack goals, targets, or specific plans. Only a quarter of <a href="https://garychandler.com/public-affairs-consultant-arizona-colorado/">local governments</a> have citizen committees and staff dedicated to sustainability, and only one in six have a separate budget to promote sustainability although local governments are spending money on specific actions.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" style="font-size:16px">Crossbow has sponsorship packages available for cities, corporations and NGOs, Chandler said. For more information, contact him at <a href="mailto:gary@crossbowcommunications.com">gary@crossbowcommunications.com</a></p>
