Regulations Unlikely To Stop Cyber Criminals

Artificial Intelligence is gaining momentum every day. It has the potential to help transform industries and our lives. Unfortunately, AI also has the potential to work against society. Some experts say that regulation will slow down those who are working for the greater good, while it won’t impact the cyber criminals who are harnessing GenAI.

Unfortunately, the art of misinformation and disinformation will flourish with AI. It will become increasingly difficult to know what is true and what is false. Hence, nations with the most advanced AI could use the technology to mislead their citizens or the citizens of an adversarial country. Politicians could also use this technology to win elections. One nation could use AI to influence an election in another. The result of this is an increasing level of distrust, which would promote greater civil unrest. AI in the wrong hands could help bring a nation to the brink of collapse.

AI deception in the future could become widespread as companies and politicians use it to reach their goals. As AI becomes more advanced, and if achieving the goal becomes more important than truth, AI could undermine human control. In one example, according to the Center for AI Safety, Volkswagen programmed their engines to reduce emissions only when being monitored. The company plead guilty and agreed to pay a multi-billion-dollar settlement in early 2017.

AI is being used to create new forms of propaganda that are more persuasive and effective than ever before. AI-powered tools can be used to create fake news articles, doctored images, and even deep-fake videos that can be used to manipulate public opinion.

One of the most concerning aspects of AI-powered propaganda is that it can be used to target individuals with personalized messages that are designed to appeal to their emotions and biases. This makes it more difficult for people to identify and resist propaganda. Another concern is that AI-powered propaganda can be used to spread misinformation on a massive scale. This can have a devastating impact on society, as it can lead to people making decisions based on false information.

“The temptation to regulate the development and application of AI is understandable,” said Gary Chandler, CEO of Crossbow Communications. “However, bad actors with bad intent will keep flying under the radar in many cases. They have very little to lose by ignoring the law.”

There are a number of things that can be done to combat AI-powered propaganda.

One is to raise awareness of the issue so that people are more likely to be skeptical of information that they see online. Another is to develop new tools that can help to identify and debunk fake news and other forms of propaganda. AI is a powerful tool that can be used for good or evil. It is up to us to ensure that AI is used for the benefit of humanity, and not for its destruction.

Here are some examples of how AI is being used to create propaganda:

Fake news: AI can be used to create fake news articles that are indistinguishable from real news. This can be done by using AI to generate text that is similar to the style of real news articles, and by using AI to create images and videos that look like they were taken by real journalists.

Doctored images: AI can be used to doctor images to make them appear to show something that did not actually happen. This can be done by using AI to remove or add objects from images, or by using AI to change the colors or textures of images.

Deepfake videos: Deepfake videos are videos that have been manipulated to make it look like someone is saying or doing something that they did not actually say or do. This can be done by using AI to replace someone’s face with the face of another person, or by using AI to change someone’s voice.

These are just a few examples of how AI is being used to create propaganda. As AI technology continues to develop, it is likely that we will see even more sophisticated and effective forms of propaganda being created. It is important to be aware of this threat and to take steps to protect ourselves from it.
